Here is a really exceptional vintage 1960s Guild Starfire VI in classic Cherry Red, representing the top-tier model of the Starfire series from this era.
This is a highly appointed example featuring all gold hardware, a Guild-branded Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, an ebony fingerboard with elaborate inlays, and multi-ply binding throughout the body and neck, all of which give this model its flagship-level look and feel. It also includes Grover patent-pending tuners, along with a full control layout featuring three-way switching, dual volume and tone controls, and master volume functionality.
Overall, this is an original and very well-preserved guitar, with only a few player-friendly modifications to note. These include a graphite nut, a fixed-style bridge replacement, and an added armrest, all of which appear to have been done with usability in mind rather than alteration for tone or aesthetics. Aside from these changes, the guitar remains largely original and exceptionally intact.
Condition is very good overall, and notably clean for its age. There are only a few light marks on the back, along with a couple of minor, older touch-up spots associated with small impressions. The original pickguard is present and intact with a small hairline crack in the usual spot. Importantly, the binding throughout remains in excellent shape, which is often a key concern on these models.
This guitar has clearly been well cared for and lightly maintained over decades of ownership, and it even comes with decades of handwritten maintenance notes from the original long-term owner, adding a great layer of provenance and character.
Tonally, this Starfire VI is very impressive. The pickups, while visually resembling humbuckers, have a slightly lower-output, more open and airy voice, especially in the neck position, which delivers a particularly warm, musical, and expressive tone. It’s a very dynamic and unique-sounding instrument compared to many similar-era electrics.
Playability is excellent, with a comfortable feel and smooth response across the board. The neck dimensions measure approximately 0.84” at the 1st fret and 0.93” at the 12th fret, and the guitar weighs 8.4 lbs, giving it a solid but balanced feel.
It comes complete with the original hardshell case, as well as the original hangtag with matching serial number.
