All Orions are handcrafted in Texas by renowned Austin luthier, Chris Forshage, in his one-man shop. Not sure of the date on this one, but it displays all of Chris' artfulness and ingenuity.
Semi-hollow, one-piece construction, it sits in perfect ergonomic balance -- with the neck in the most advantageous and healthy position.
Chris' version of a headless top is simply elegant, not only to look at but from a functional standpoint. I've had Strandbergs and Steinbergers, and this top blows them away. There's none of the first position anxiety that the others can cause. You never know you're playing a headless.
The neck and frets are in excellent shape, and the action is very low. It plays incredibly well.
With the help of my local luthier, Jon Pistey, of Concord NH, I modded this one, replacing the original pickups and electronics. As you can see in the picture, it now has a Mojotone silent coil P90 (humbucker sized) in the neck position, a Mojotone silent single coil in the middle position, and a Seymour Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge position. Amazing tone in all three positions.
Couple these with two push/pull pots for coil splits, and the sound options are nearly endless.
A few notes.
1/ We disconnected the piezo but left the pickup itself and all the switches and wiring intact. Why, you ask? Honestly, because I kept getting confused about the various switching options, and I really wasn't using it.
But my understanding from Jon is that it wouldn't take much for someone to bring it back online.
2/ There are a few very small chips near the neck pickup and on the right side. And a few dings that I tried to capture. None of them is more than normal wear and tear, and really you wouldn't notice them if you weren't looking for them. Still, that's why this is rated Very Good instead of much higher.
3/ Full disclosure, the push/pull coil split on the tone pot is a little tight. It works fine, but I want to be as transparent as possible.
4/ And speaking of Strandberg, this comes with a high-end Strandberg case.
So why am I selling it? Something's gotta give. Too many guitars. And I'm trying to raise funds for an indie film project.
