This guitar was retopped and converted by well respected luthier Joshua Young using a Smokies red spruce top supplied by legendary builder John Arnold. The restoration and build process was documented publicly on The Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum. I cannot insert link here. Please search online for “UMGF 1947 D-28 Retop With Smokies Red Spruce“ for details on this extraordinary build.
Some original braces were reused where possible, including the upper transverse brace, while damaged original components were replaced or repurposed during the restoration.
I have the original top and will include with sale.
Joshua intentionally preserved the worn vintage aesthetic rather than over-restoring the instrument, giving it the feel of a well-loved old Martin with upgraded tonal potential.
Tone is everything you’d hope for from a Brazilian dreadnought with Adirondack power: huge bass response, dry vintage character, strong fundamental note separation, and the explosive headroom associated with pre-war style Martins.
