1979 Gibson Explorer Original Vintage Actual Disaster For Repair *Please Read & Read Again*

Alright, here goes nothing!

This guitar walked into our lives about 5 years ago. The serial number was obvious at the time through a horrific black rattlecan paint job. We thought to ourselves, hey. Maybe this guitar can be stripped and resprayed! Maybe we can do a custom color and it can be something out of this world. Well, we got the paint off. I wish we hadn’t but sometimes it’s important to see the truth even if it stings. I’d be lying if I said we didn’t pay up for the guitar, because we simply thought it was a vintage explorer with a less-than-great refin.

This is a real 1979 Gibson Explorer. Someone (or something. I hope it was a hungry shark) took the pointed ends completely off of it. Maybe they tried to reshape it into another style of guitar. I don’t know and I’m not going to speculate. Regardless, here we are. Large pieces of what we think is pine were attached with bondo (it appears) to replace those pieces. It is very light wood and certainly relieved weight from the body. The neck is fully in tact with no issues other than that all of the original paint was removed. There has never been a break, which is a plus.

Guys, it’s a horror show. We both know it. I haven’t wanted to put this on the market for years because deep down we couldn’t stomach the loss but it’s time for someone else to do something with this. Paint it an insane color and use it as a stage guitar. Cut the ends off a second time and add different shapes of wood. Remove the neck and put it on a whole new body. I won’t tell you what to do as the creative liberties to be taken with this piece are legitimately endless. May the bath we’re taking on this one be your fountain of youth.
