🔷 AKAI 4400D is a rare Japanese reel-to-reel tape recorder from one of Akai’s strongest mid-1970s periods. This is no basic domestic open-reel machine, but a proper 3-head deck with the company’s one-micron gap playback head, post-tape monitoring, and the kind of practical feature set that still makes these models attractive to collectors and tape enthusiasts today. Open references place the model in 1973–1975, made in Japan.

🎙️ Time that still sounds alive
What makes the 4400D especially appealing is the balance between straightforward mechanics and genuinely useful functions. Available references confirm a 4-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural system, 3 heads, support for 7-inch / 18 cm reels, speeds of 3¾ and 7½ ips, and frequency response reaching 23 kHz according to HiFi Engine, while hifi-wiki gives the European-style spec of 30 Hz – 22 kHz ±3 dB at 19 cm/s. Both sources agree on the important point: this is a serious home reel-to-reel deck with real bandwidth and a proper 3-head layout.

👤 If you are reading this — you already understand
You are not looking for decorative vintage.
You are looking for a working tape machine with real character. The 4400D has exactly what makes this Akai period so desirable: large front panel, live VU meters, separate record/playback architecture, post-tape control, Multiplay, and Duoplay. This is not just a collector’s piece — it is a genuinely usable analog machine.

🎧 What you get beyond the sound
A Japanese mid-1970s 3-head reel-to-reel deck
One-micron gap playback head
Multiplay
Duoplay
Post-tape control
Automatic limit stop / auto stop
Horizontal or vertical operation
And one practical advantage on this exact unit: the price NOT includes the reels shown in the photos, while the rear panel photos show multi-voltage AC 100–240V / 50–60Hz execution and line-level connectivity. The first seven points are supported by reference sources; the last two come from your photos and listing notes.

🧠 Why this model matters
The AKAI 4400D belongs to a very successful family of home 7-inch decks where the company already offered a near-serious enthusiast feature set without turning the machine into something overly complex. Open data for the model lists 1 motor, 3 heads, 4 tracks, 9.5 / 19 cm/s speeds, >50 dB signal-to-noise ratio, 100 kHz bias frequency, rewind time around 180 seconds for 350 m tape, and mic / line / DIN inputs with line / DIN / headphone outputs. For collectors, that is an attractive combination of period styling, practical usability, and recognizable Akai design.
