Greco PMB-800 1978 "Project Series" FUJIGEN Paul McCartney model MIJ Japan vintage
【 About This item and Sound 】
The Greco PMB-800 is a fine example from the 1978 Greco Project Series. This particular instrument is in exceptional condition, retaining its original hard case, original silicone-treated polishing pouch, manual, wrench, and other accessories — a remarkably well-preserved piece.
It features a maple through-neck construction with a maple body, finished in a natural color with dot position markers — a Paul McCartney-style bass specification.
With its maple body, maple through-neck, thick rosewood fingerboard, and high-gain pickups, this bass delivers a bold, powerful low end with impressive clarity and definition.
The original-design bridge efficiently transfers string vibration into the body, allowing you to truly feel the resonance as you play.
In the front pickup or center position, you’ll hear a tone reminiscent of Paul.
Switch to the center or rear pickup, and you can dial in a Chris-inspired character.
Crank up the gain, and you’re firmly in Lemmy territory.
This alone speaks to the remarkable versatility of this instrument.
While its striking design immediately catches the eye, its sound proves it to be a truly all-purpose rock bass.

【 About Greco , Project Series 】
In the late 1970s, Greco began producing highly detailed replica models, meticulously recreating vintage instruments down to the finest details. In 1980, these efforts were officially introduced as the “Super Real series”. Each model carefully reproduced the body shapes, visual characteristics, and specifications of different eras, marking a groundbreaking chapter in the history of Japanese vintage guitars.
Around 1976–77, Greco introduced the “Project Series,” positioned between full custom-made instruments and regular production models. By regularly producing popular custom specifications requested through Greco’s made-to-order system, the company achieved both custom-level quality and strong cost performance. In many ways, it occupied a position similar to today’s Fender Custom Shop Team-Built models.
Carefully selected tonewoods and uncompromising craftsmanship defined the series, with meticulous attention paid to historical accuracy and fine details. The lineup included Les Paul, Stratocaster, and ES-335 style models, as well as signature-inspired instruments such as the Brian May model and this Paul McCartney-style bass.
All Project Series models originally came with a special “FAULTLESS CASE,” a distinctive accessory that set the series apart from Greco’s regular production line.
The technology and expertise cultivated through the Project Series later led to the legendary Super Real series and Mint Collection series — cornerstones of what the world now recognizes as Japanese Vintage. Why are old Greco guitars praised worldwide and referred to as “Japanese Vintage”?
Play one, and you will understand.
