The Wood Library - What Is It?
Guitars often come through PRS' production line and out of their doors labeled as “Wood Library” guitars. But what does it all mean!? Allow us to attack this question head on and try to explain these unique instruments.
Tucked away upstairs in a corner of PRS' 85,000 square foot factory are racks of extraordinary wood. Maple, mahogany, korina, rosewood, swamp ash, you name it. Dozens of species of timber hanging out in this area they call the “Wood Library.”
The Wood Library program is in a way similar to PRS' Private Stock program in that it is an elaborate menu-based program for the PRS Core line of guitars designed to give their dealers the opportunity to build special runs for their store and customer base. The common misconception is that the quality of the wood in the wood library is unique. That’s not the case; the wood library is graded on the same scale in which we grade our other woods: Core, 10-top, Artist Package, Private Stock.
What is unique however, are the combinations of wood dealers can place together when ordering a run of wood library instruments. Let’s give an example, take for instance the Custom 24 model, it comes stock with a mahogany back, maple top, mahogany neck, and rosewood fingerboard. A dealer ordering a Wood Library Custom 24 run now has the option of swapping that mahogany back for korina, or swamp ash, or anything else offered inside the wood library. Or instead of swapping the Custom 24’s standard mahogany back they may choose to swap the mahogany neck for maple, or rosewood.
It may seem complicated, but the Wood Library is simple, it enables dealers to swap some of the materials in PRS' core guitars. It’s designed to encourage the dealer to visit PRS and hand select the woods, options, colors, birds, pickups, electronics, well you get the idea…for their very own special run. Why do dealers come all this way? To give their customers the very best experience with our brand and theirs.
The Wood Library is a great option for customers looking for a unique wood combination and something a little different than we normally offer!
The One That Started It All
The Custom 24 is the original PRS. Since its introduction, it has offered a unique option for serious players and defined PRS tone and playability.
Played by internationally touring artists, gigging musicians, and aspiring players, the this unique Wood Library Custom 24 features a 10-Top grade figured maple top and 3-piece swamp ash back with a 24-fret, 25” scale length figured maple neck neck with ebony fretboard. Anchored by PRS’s patented Gen III tremolo and Phase III tuners with wing buttons the Custom 24 is known for its playability, versatility, and tuning stability.
The Custom 24 is outfitted with PRS DMO treble and bass pickups with volume and tone controls and a 5-way blade switch. DMO (Dynamic, Musical, Open) pickups were personally designed by Paul Reed Smith and the PRS New Products Engineering team. From our own hands-on research into coveted vintage pickup models to advancements in signal analyzation and “tuning” technology, these pickups incorporate every detail of pickup knowledge PRS has gained in recent years of R&D.
PRS DMO pickups have a “wide open” sound with vocal character, meaning they deliver clear, pleasant-sounding tones across a wide range of frequencies (bass to treble) in each pickup.
The Custom 24 is the quintessential PRS guitar. This iconic instrument was the first model that Paul Reed Smith brought to the public at PRS Guitars’ first Winter NAMM show in 1985 and has been a top seller ever since.
