Marantz DPM-7 Prototype – incl. schematics

Digital power amplifier with potential Digital Processing Amplifier functionality

(Philips & Marantz R&D – approx. 1985 | estimated circulation: ~60 units)

It is very likely that you have never encountered this device before, either online, in brochures, or in retail environments. For that reason, a short explanation of its background and historical context is provided.

In the mid-1980s, Philips developed an advanced digital amplifier platform to demonstrate to Marantz that digital signal processing, parametric control, and real-time visualisation could be integrated into a single high-end audio module. The DPM-7 was built as a concept unit, evaluated internally, but never released for commercial production. The project was discontinued at an early stage; it is believed that only approximately sixty test units entered circulation.

As a result, the DPM-7 should be regarded as a rare technical development unit with clear historical relevance. The model was never officially released and elements of its concept later appeared in the Marantz AX-1000.

Operational status

This particular unit functions as a power amplifier and features an active spectrum display / graphic analyzer.

Other functionality is present on the front panel but is not active (not connected).

Functionality

  • Power amplifier: operational; usable as a standalone power amp
  • Spectrum display / graphic analyzer: operational
  • Volume control and other basic functions: operational
  • Other functions: status unknown; no possibility for us to fully test

No additional technical investigation has been carried out into potential latent or reprogrammable functionality.

Present functions and potential

(based on front panel architecture; functionality not guaranteed)

  • DSP architecture (Audio Signal Processor concept)
  • Graphic equalizer with preset memories M1–M4
  • Dynamic level / release time control
  • Reverberation time / absorption
  • Special effect / selector
  • Tape routing (copy 1 ↔ 2)
  • Direct / process switching
  • MM/MC phono selection
  • Input matrix: CD, CD2/DAT2, Tuner, Video/Aux, Phono

Interface is present; operation is not guaranteed

Include

  • Original schematics
  • Additional power amplifier board
  • Additional spectrum display module

The design is based on a hybrid digital–analog architecture in which digital control is combined with an analog power stage, complemented by real-time visual feedback.

  • Analog output stage for stereo operation
  • Digital 44.1 kHz / 16-bit signal management philosophy
  • Real-time spectrum visualisation
  • Internal digital control structure

Implementation may vary between individual prototypes.

Construction

  • Fully steel chassis
  • Large ventilation section in the top cover
  • Advanced front display with multi-segment control
  • Front panel equipped with extensive switches and parametric controls

Cosmetic condition

  • Well-preserved front panel; markings clearly legible
  • Spectrum display fully responsive
  • Supplied with an additional spectrum display
  • Please refer to photos for indicative condition

Delivery

  • Carefully packed and insured
  • Collection possible
  • Shipping by arrangement

Final note

The Marantz DPM-7 represents an early and ambitious digital development project within Philips–Marantz R&D. The power amplifier and spectrum display are operational; all other subsystems have not been tested and remain of unknown status. Due to the very limited number of units produced, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine R&D prototype from the early digital audio era.
