This is a pretty exceptional snare drum. First of all, it's a stave drum, which means it's made out of vertical solid sections of wood glued together like a barrel, rather than cylindrical plies. It was made by Terry Thompson of Daville Drumworks – I also own a kit from him and they are perfectly built drums.
This drum is made out of Padauk wood, which is a pretty hard wood and is comparable to your rosewoods and Cocobolo, though it's a bit more attack-y. It's very biting and powerful and punches well above its weight. It also has a Brazilian Ebony inlay around the circumference of the drum. Shell thickness is half an inch and both bearing edges are a half-roundover with a 45º angle inner cut.
As for hardware, this drum comes with a DW Mag throwoff, an adjustable butt plate, two die-cast hoops, HD sleeved washers, and 8 of your average double-ended tube lugs. Obviously it's all assembled and will come with the Remo X14 batter head, Aquarian Hi-Performance snare side head, and Puresound 20-strand Custom Pro brass wires it's pictured with.
The only blemish is a little edge damage around where the vent grommet used to be, I removed it after a year or so. Also, the ebony inlay has expanded since I originally bought the drum and now sticks out a negligible amount from the padauk around it – not visible to the eye but you can feel a little "lip". Everything else is the gorgeous, mysterious grain you see in the pictures!
I bought all the parts of this drum for about $500, but you, dear reader, can take delivery of this beautiful drum for only $240 with FREE SHIPPING (or make me a –reasonable– offer). Please enjoy a typical-tuning soundfile below!
