For sale in this auction is a Gibson Tony Iommi Custom Shop SG in original ebony (black) finish. The guitar still has the protective film over the pick guard and has never been played, except for the testing to assure everything works as expected. I am the original owner and, since purchasing this guitar it has been cased and stored in a climate controlled environment. This guitar is in MINT condition. Exactly as it came from the custom shop (No Professional set up has been performed). It includes a COA and case candy as seen in the pictures.
The Gibson Custom Shop Tony Iommi Signature SG was first released in 1999. It was the first ever artist signature SG model produced by Gibson. The production run of this Custom Shop model appears to have lasted from 1999 to 2003; although, initially planned as a limited run of 200 guitars, there doesn't seem to have been a strict production limit, though serial numbers do not appear to exceed 300.
Some key facts about this specific model:
- It was originally intended as a limited edition run.
- It introduced historically accurate features later seen on other SG reissues
- It featured a unique pickguard shape never used on other models.
- Serial numbers followed a "TI XXX" format.
- A regular production USA version was introduced in 2001, not to be confused with these custom shop versions.
- COAs were issued starting in 2000, while earlier models had a red warranty card.
- The guitar came in two finishes, dark wine red and black ebony.
It's important to distinguish this Custom Shop version from the USA production version released later. Make no mistake this is the custom shop version.
This is number TI-205. These guitars are almost impossible to find.
As founding member and lead guitarist for Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi is known for his high-powered playing style and great riffs, inspiring many heavy metal guitarists. The Tony Iommi Signature model is constructed to Tony’s specifications using the patented ultra-thin double cutaway 1961 Gibson SG body style with the "slim taper" neck. The 24-fret ebony fingerboard is inlaid with stunning sterling-silver accents, echoing Iommi's trademark cross- insignia. The pickups are two Gibson Tony Iommi signature humbucker models that deliver the powerful tone for which he is famous.
