F.E Olds Special Cornet (892303)

This horn is from 1974 and was built at the F.E Olds factory in Fullerton, California.

Condition - Good

The Olds cornets are very similar to their trumpet counterparts, being that they are reliable tanks that can last for a long time. This one has the added benefit of being silver plated, which is usually preferred in ensemble settings (but is completely up to personal taste). This horn would work well for a student or someone looking for a cheaper cornet to play.

The Olds cornets tend to sound similar to their trumpets, mainly because of the lack of shepherds crook. Non shepards crook cornets are mainly used in marches as it features a more direct sound compared to shepherds crook. This particular horn has a brighter tone color, mostly due to the plating, and is easy to play and keep in tune. It’s also not stuffy at all, which is a huge plus.

Cosmetically, the horns plating has a lot of scratches and pitting/chipping. The chipping is found on the bottom second valve cap, at the top of the bell, the top of the third valve slide screw, on the right side of the first two valve casings, and on the left of the third valve casing. The horn also has two visible dents, both of which on the second valve slide. There is also a slight bend at the beginning of the leadpipe, but it’s barely noticeable. This horn is also missing its third valve slide ring, which can be purchased from many retailers.

This horn has been chem cleaned and is in playing condition.
