The Shure Vocal Master VA-300 was first introduced in 1967. It was available for sale from 1968 to 1980. This VA 300-C came out in 1978 and was a favorite of The Carpenters (if it was good enough for Karen’s vocals…it’s good enough for the rest of us mere mortals), & Elvis Presley was also a big supporter of these, and one is actually displayed at Graceland amongst some of his personal recording gear favorites.
The Vocal Master was significant as it was the first portable PA system for vocals, featuring a six-channel mixer, power amplifier, and loudspeakers. The system quickly became a popular workhorse for touring bands, schools, and churches during the 1970s. A user manual from 1978 indicates that the "C" variant was still in production or being supported at that time. Stories about The “Reverb” that this unit produces is stuff of legends.
The condition of this unit is extremely rare. It has some nicks and scratches here and there….but when you consider it is 48 years old, the term “SPECTACULAR“ when describing this particular head, is in no means an overstatement. The truth is, these units produce a reverb that is unique, and if you’re a fan…it’s difficult being satisfied with anything else. Also, the many features this unit possesses allows for endless recording options be it “live” or in studio.
