1939 Carl Sturm Viola No. 1 – 15.75” American Handmade Instrument – Excellent Condition

Handcrafted American viola by Carl Sturm (1939), labeled “Carl Sturm 1939, Viola No. 1.”

This was the first viola made by Carl Sturm, built with fine materials and careful workmanship typical of early 20th-century American luthiery.

The instrument measures 15.75 inches (40 cm) and features a two-piece spruce top and flamed maple back with an original amber-brown varnish. The sound is even across all strings, with a strong lower register and clear upper range.

Condition

Excellent overall condition. Original varnish intact; no cracks or structural issues. No prior repairs. Professionally inspected and appraised by Brobst Violin Shop (Alexandria VA, Dec 2023) at a replacement value of $8,500.

Provenance

Purchased new in 1939 by the seller’s grandfather for his daughter, the instrument’s only player. It has remained in the same family since new and represents the first viola built by Carl Sturm.
