Greco ORDER 1978 Firebird I – Rare Fujigen Japan Vintage

This is a Greco Firebird I, dating from 1978 based on the serial number. A highly sought-after Fujigen build. According to the original warranty card, it is marked “ORDER,” which indicates that it was produced through Greco’s special order system at the time, making this a very rare piece.

The specs appear to be similar to the FB98 listed in the 1978 catalog, but this one seems to have both body and neck made of mahogany. The fingerboard looks like rosewood, but I believe it is likely striped ebony. The pickups appear to be PU-105 (not listed in the catalog, so specifications are based on observation).

When I received it, several mounting screws for the tuners on the 1st to 3rd strings were broken off and stuck inside. A professional repairman removed them, properly repaired the area, and secured the tuners with new screws. (The repaired areas are hidden under the tuners and not visible.) The guitar was also fully set up at the same time, so it is in excellent playing condition right away.

Greco Firebirds, Explorers, and Flying Vs are very popular and prices are rising in the market. This one is a rare Firebird I (model one) order-made guitar, not listed in the catalog. It is a seldom-seen piece in good condition, and I highly recommend it to collectors looking for something unique!

Considering it is 47 years old, it has no significant damage, looks clean, and is in very good condition. That said, it does show minor scratches, scuffs, and there is a mark on the side of the fingerboard between the 5th and 10th frets. As noted above, there was a tuner screw repair, but the upside is that it has already been addressed, so there is no risk of screws breaking on you later (I took that risk for you—so you’re safe!). The guitar has been fully cleaned and perfectly adjusted by a professional repairman.

As for the case, due to its design, when stored normally the banjo-style tuners touch the bottom of the case. To prevent this, cushioning material has been placed under the neck to raise the height. If the tuners are pressed against the case bottom, it could be dangerous—if the case were dropped, there would be a high risk of breakage. Of course, it will be perfectly protected for shipping, but for carrying after it arrives, I recommend not using this case. A sturdy gig bag would be a safer choice for transportation.
