Up for sale, a 1960s Vox Cougar Bass, model V214 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This is a stunningly clean vintage bass, with incredibly consistent and deep flame figuring in the maple across the entire top and back of the bass. Produced for Vox by Eko in Italy, this incarnation of the Cougar was only made from 1965-69! Currently strung with a set of flatwound strings, the tone has the attack and thud of an upright bass. The neck pickup in particular has a punch and girth that belies the slim single coil design, and the bridge pickup balances things out with more top end and tic-tac snap. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Vox Cougar is a collector grade example of this classic Vox model, complete with the original hardshell case and vintage accessories.
The maple neck has a well rounded medium C profile with a 1 9/16" nut width and 30" scale length that's easy to navigate and fret. The ebony fretboard adds a certain attack and clarity to the tone not found with rosewood boards, and the stock fretwire shows modest wear from frets 1-7 with only very light wear further up the board. The action is low and consistent with no buzzing or dead spots and the frets retain their full original height. Topped off with pearl dot inlays and only lightly aged fretboard binding, the Cougar is one classy bass! On the headstock, the multi-ply plastic veneer is inlayed with a vertical "Vox" logo and four original tuning machines turn very smoothly and hold pitch well. The "Made in Italy by Vox" text is also clearly visible on the reverse side.
All of the electronics work as they should, with individual Volume and Tone controls for each pickup and immaculate white pickup covers. The entire wiring harness has even been pulled, inspected and cleaned so that everything works exactly as it did the day the bass left the factory. The four original chrome knobs are intact and in fantastic shape, matching the clean chrome on the tailpiece and bridge (which even has a carved ebony base!). The tailpiece is original, while the tailpiece hinge is a newer Hofner replacement which matches the style and function of the original very well (the stock hinge was regrettably broken and unable to be repaired to the satisfaction of our techs).
Although difficult to capture faithfully in the photos, the flame maple figuring on this bass is truly spectacular, and the laminate top and back are each cut from a bookmatched piece of maple, with mirrored figuring most prominent on the horns and widest spot of the lower bout. The deep, translucent cherry finish shows only a few light scuffs and scratches, mostly on the back and adjacent to the bridge where that particular piece of hardware was moved under tension a time or two. The multi-ply binding on the body is lightly aged and in great overall shape as well.
The original Victoria Luggage hardshell case is included and also in great shape. The case has original working latches and handle, with a clean gold plush interior and even the Victoria Luggage sticker near the case pocket.
A vintage strap (likely original) and coil cable are included too!
