Hello friends. Welcome to the Four Winds Lutherie shop on Reverb. I'm a pro guitar builder with 25 years experience. Check out my shop page to learn more about me, or message me with an questions.
Offered here is the prototype for my original design 100% handmade in the USA JX72 **downsized** offset. This one turned out to look, play, and sound too good to spend its life as a pickup and hardware tester, so I've decided to send this off to a new home where it will be played.
It has an eye-catching 1 piece quartersawn Streaky Black Limba Body and Neck with Spiderweb Ziricote fretboard. It was built from late 2022 to early 2023 and used since then to test and demo various pickups, electronics and bridge/tailpiece heights and combos in my shop. It's in its last configuration of brand new Mojotone Johnny Winter Signature Firebird pickups (still with the protective coating on them). They're a great classic Rock tone paired with the open midrange of the Black Limba construction anbd snap of the Fender scale length.
The idea for this design is a smaller J inspired body with simpler electronics and hardware, a low profile non-tremolo stoptail rather than strings through feel, and narrow string spacing at the bridge. It’s Fender 25-1/2" scale with 22 frets. This body shape measures 18-3/4” x 12-3/4” x 1-3/4" thick. It's about 1-5/8” shorter and 1” narrower than a Jazzmaster/Jaguar. It hangs on a strap in between how a Strat and Tele will, and its less bulky in your lap.
The neck joint uses machine screws recessed into the body coupled to threaded inserts in the neck for better durability and stability. Along with no neck plate, the carve of the neck blends into the contour of the heel for better access to the last frets.
The only reason I call it a prototype is it was an experiment to determine the absolute lowest bridge height possible while still keeping very low action. Along the way a 1mm Black Limba shim custom fit to the contoured neck pocket/heel was added to give a greater break angle over the saddles.. Its shown in the last two photos. Its currently setup with GHS Boomer 10-46 set 3-4/64" at the 15th fret and very little relief. You can pull the shim and get the same action with a slightly shallower break angle over the saddles more akin to a Jazzmaster.
Under the hood (pickguard) there's a few extra screw holes and inserts in the pickup cavities from different soapbar installs.
Otherwise there's some minor play wear mostly visible on the pickguard, less on the chrome hardware, and a few minor dings or scratches most which were touched up along the way. Some blend in the with the naturally wormy spalty look of Black Limba. The few that don't I've tried to show and circle. The finish is a semi-open grain semi-gloss Nitro Lacquer with a smooth very slightly textured feel. It has enough depth to bring out the figure in the wood but hides wear and dirt/sweat very well and cleans easily. The neck has a bit more gloss from natural buffing action of play.
Please remember this isn't a partscaster or DIY lumber yard project. It's a custom designed handmade instrument with select woods, premium features, and top quality components crafted from scratch with care and attention to detail. This is a great chance to get a unique high quality guitar you can get years of play out of without spending a ton of cash, all while supporting a small builder in the process :-) . ...And now the rest of the details...
