The Ibanez GB10EM JBB, bearing the signature of George Benson, is a hollow body guitar that successfully pays tribute to one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time while remaining accessible to a wide audience. Designed as an affordable version of the high-end GB10, this guitar retains the elegance and spirit of the original, adopting more cost-effective manufacturing choices without sacrificing the essentials: tone and playability.
At first glance, the Jet Blue Burst finish captivates with its depth and sophistication. The gold hardware, floating black pickguard, block inlays on the fingerboard, and the George Benson logo on the headstock give the instrument a strong identity, decidedly jazz-oriented, with a real visual presence. It has the class of a much more expensive instrument, and it wears it proudly.
Its double cutaway hollow body made of linden is more compact than traditional archtops, offering a very comfortable feel in hand. This smaller size also makes it comfortable to play whether standing or sitting, which is rare for this type of guitar. The maple neck is smooth and enjoyable, paired with an engineered wood fretboard that, while not quite matching rosewood in feel, performs its role effectively. The 22 medium frets allow for precise playing, and the body shape facilitates easy access to the upper register.
But it’s when plugged in that the GB10EM truly shines. The two Magic Touch-Mini pickups, in floating mini-humbucker format, deliver a sound palette perfectly tailored for jazz:
The neck pickup offers a warm, smooth, and rounded tone—ideal for rich chords or fluid melodic lines.
The bridge pickup is brighter and expands the tonal range towards funky or bluesy sounds, even mild overdrive for fusion lovers.
Clarity remains excellent, whether you're playing fingerstyle or complex chords. The balance between lows and highs is outstanding for a guitar in this price range.
In short, this guitar is not just an affordable version of a legendary model: it’s a true gateway into the jazz world, with a stunning look, inspiring tone, and remarkable playability. It pays tribute to George Benson while remaining accessible—and that’s what makes it so appealing. A guitar that makes you want to play… and to stay lost in the velvety harmonies of jazz.
