1913 Gibson Style O Acoustic Archtop – "Pattie":

Owned & Played by Eric Clapton & George Harrison (1968-1970) — Critical Songwriting Instrument linked to ‘Badge’, and ‘Here Comes The Sun’ — Cream & Beatles Era — From Estate Of Delaney Bramlett Collection — Authenticated & Forensically Matched —

Summary:
Offered here is one of the most significant surviving acoustic guitars from the late 1960s rock era—an ultra rare 1913 Gibson Style O Acoustic Archtop, affectionately known as "Pattie." Played/owned by Eric Clapton and George Harrison during their formative songwriting collaborations in 1968, and later owned by Delaney Bramlett, this is a rare and culturally critical guitar directly tied to the end of both The Beatles and Cream, and the birth of their respective solo careers and their earliest songwriting sessions for ‘Badge’, and what would become the bridge and ending portions of The Beatles ‘Here Comes The Sun’ - October of 1968 in Los Angeles

Historical Significance:
Photographed in October 1968 in a private songwriting session between Clapton and Harrison (as seen in the documentary Eric Clapton; Life In 12 Bars), this guitar was played by Harrison in the only known photo of the duo workshopping the song "Badge", their first co-written composition. “Badge” was recorded that week during the sessions for Cream's Goodbye album at Wally Heider Studios, Hollywood. Months later, George would ask Eric permission to re-use the bridge portion of ‘Badge’, - in a different key and tempo for ‘Here Comes The Sun’. George is noted referring to the bridge of “Here Comes The Sun” as “The Son Of Badge” in the original lyrics sheet - giving this instrument an extremely unique connection to both Cream AND The Beatles final albums.

Later, Clapton left the guitar in Los Angeles, where Delaney Bramlett would take stewardship—using it extensively in songwriting circles during the creation of SuperstarLet It Rain, and other works that helped launch Clapton's solo career, the formation of Derek & The Dominos, and Harrison's All Things Must Pass era.

Unique Identifiers & Provenance

  • Documented in two known photos:
    • The Harrison Photo (October 19, 1968): George Harrison playing "Pattie" during the famous garden writing session with Clapton.
    • The Clapton Photo (NY Times, November 1968): Clapton holding "Pattie" — fretboard binding damage visible, matching current state.
  • Featured in the Eric Clapton documentary Life In 12 Bars.
  • Owned/played by Clapton, played by Harrison, and held by Bramlett from 1970 until his passing in 2008. Sold by Bramlett’s estate via Julien’s Auctions. Now part of the His Master’s Voice / Victor Archives in Camden, NJ.

Technical Specs & Condition:

  • Model: Gibson Style O Archtop Acoustic
  • Year: 1913
  • Serial Number: Documented and matched
  • Tailpiece: Mid-century Gibson L-48 archtop tailpiece (installed by Clapton/Bramlett era luthier Milt Owen, LA)
  • Tuners: 1950s/1960s Gibson 3x3 strip tuners
  • Finish: Refinished circa 1968 (prior to garden session photo) - touched up in modern era (unknown)
  • Repairs: Period correct neck reset, fretboard binding repairs (visible in both vintage and modern photos), bridge replacement, professional playability restoration - refret
  • Case: Mid 60s Gibson Vintage hard shell (later period)

Cultural Importance & Valuation Context:
This is a dual-provenance instrument from two of the most important figures in rock history—George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Given the current rarity of Harrison-played and photo-documented guitars, combined with Clapton’s direct ownership and use during the Cream farewell era"Pattie" stands as one of the only surviving instruments of its kind in private hands.

This is the first photo documented George Harrison AND Eric Clapton played/owned acoustic guitars ever to come to public offer - and it is a museum-grade, investment-level acquisition for collectors of Beatles, Clapton, or 1960s rock heritage instruments.

Why This Guitar Matters

This is the only known example of a dual provenance played/owned George Harrison & Eric Clapton acoustic guitar during their tenures with The Beatles & Cream to ever become available to the public.

  • Owned & Played by Eric Clapton, documented during the Cream and Blind Faith eras
  • Played by Beatle George Harrison alongside Clapton during one of their earliest writing sessions (shortly following Clapton's appearance on The Beatles 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'), and photographed in 1968 during the writing sessions for Cream's 'Badge' (Harrison/Clapton). The bridge and ending portions of 'Badge' would later be repurposed with Eric's permission for George's 'Here Comes The Sun' (who titled these portions 'Son Of Badge' in his original lyric sheet) - featured on The Beatles final album, 'Abbey Road', in 1969.
  • Gifted to Delaney Bramlett in 1970, whom co-wrote and produced early Clapton hits 'Let It Rain', 'After Midnight', as well as The Carpenters 'Superstar' - Bramlett used the guitar for 30+ years until his passing in 2008. The instrument would later join The Victor Company/Victor Studios archives (The Victor Vault) former RCA-Victor Company.

Unlike signed memorabilia or speculative association pieces, this guitar has:

  • Verified physical and forensic markers
  • Historic photographs
  • A documented chain of custody

It is, in every sense, a living, playable artifact of music history.
