Once again we have the best version of the best preamps available in the world, provided by the best customer service on reverb and modified by the best tech on the east coast.
These iconic 1084’s have been modified with a pair of extra switches located on the faceplate (the silver switches to the left of the 48v buttons) which allow you to toggle the load to your microphones. Specifically, if you are using a modern condenser mic, the switches in the top position will give you an impedance load of 1200ohms, or if you’re using a ribbon microphone like a Coles, RCA, Altec or Royer, you switch the switch in the down position to provide the microphone with proper 300 ohm load impedance, providing the load the vintage ribbons and dynamics want to see.
The modification was done at JML Recording Studios in NJ and uses the same braiding wiring technique that they do in the Neve factory. The wiring was also zip tied using the same zip ties to blend aesthetics seamlessly. No electrical tape was used, only professional heat shrink tubing and leaded Kester brand solder by a veteran studio tech.
Most commercial studios with Neve these 1073/1084’s are Set up for 1.2K ohms, which is a little bit brighter and shiny. However, many top engineers prefer the warmth that the Neve 1073’s and 1083’s give you at the lower impedance setting, especially on ribbons and dynamic mics (or overly bright condensers). In fact, you are missing out of how good these Neve preamps can sound when using 1200ohms on your Coles or RCA44! To my knowledge, nobody has ever done this modification to the faceplate, which gives you direct access to impedance load options at your fingertips! Probably because most folks don’t have the cahones to drill out a new Neve and rewire it.
These unique units are in mint condition, as you can see from the photos. The modules were manufactured in 2021 and have zero issues. They were gone through fully at the time of modification and serviced (May 2025). These are the horizontal versions. The Neve rack gives you phantom power control and a master output level of gain staging.
As you probably know, Neve 1084‘s contain the exact same preamp circuit as the 1073’s, the only difference being an extra band of EQ, essentially making these 1084’s a pair of 1073’s on steroids. If you’re looking for the greatest preamp channel strip ever made, with the added boost of having impedance control for any type of microphone element on the fly, you’ll only find it here at Lutz Multimedia LLC.
