Note: Be sure to check out the video for a more detailed description and to hear this guitar in action!
This Howie Griffin Series comes with a custom fit hardshell case. It has a 24-fret fingerboard with a 25-inch scale length. The Royal Blackwood fretboard has a compound radius of 15.45 inches at the tail down to 9.55 inches at the nut.
The Shape of the neck is what we call the Howie Thin Line. At the nut the depth is 0.91 inches and at the 12th fret it is 0.93 inches. It’s not super thin like the 1960s Gibson ES 330s but it’s close. It has a very fast and easy feel. The width at the nut is 1.67 inches, and at the tail it is 2.16 inches making it a fairly thin span higher up on the fretboard. Because of the chambering of this guitar, it weighs only 6.1lbs. Compare this to the average Les Paul that can weigh up to 10lbs.
The pickups on this guitar are Seymour Duncan’s Whole Lotta Humbucker set. The recipe for these pickups came from Seymour’s work in London where he wound pups for some of the world’s best players in the days when The Yardbirds ruled the music scene. This set was made for a very special player, and he has saved the formula ever since. The key is a rough cast Alnico 5 magnet and Seymour’s special winding pattern. These pickups make everything bigger and warmer while also adding a slight compression effect to your amp. Together they give you sounds and tone reminiscent of the early 70s British rock.
The finish on this guitar was done with a catalyzed urethane that is normally used on automobiles. This high-end urethane dries very hard allowing fewer coats and a thinner finish.
As usual with all our guitars, this guitar was built by me, the sole builder, from start to finish. It was also built mainly by hand with a little help from our small CNC machine for things like the inlays and the Fibonacci violin carve on the top.
