The Sunflower Fuzz is a clone of the Analogman Sunface circuit with a warm and organic NOS Soviet germanium transistor in Q1 and a more aggressive sounding NOS European germanium transistor in Q2. Both carefully tested and selected for hFE/very low leakage and biased to perfection.
In addition, there is a three-way toggle that will select between three input capacitors changing the body of the fuzz. Select between the stock SF input cap when in the down position, a much lower value for a tighter sound in the middle position and the stock value for the original Arbiter Fuzz Face for a warmer fuzz in the up position.
A note about the Fuzz Face circuit in general. If you’re familiar with it, than this is most likely old news. Maybe you’ve tried a Fuzz Face before and really enjoyed it, there’s an equal chance that it failed to leave a noteworthy impression. The FF is a pedal that can be finicky in a few different ways. This is even more so with a FF that uses germanium transistors.
For one, it wants to be the first pedal in your chain and typically doesn't play well with anything between it and your guitar, even buffers. It likes to be fed into an amp on the edge of breakup or further. Typically the Volume and Fuzz controls are turned up very high, if not maxed out. You can then use your guitars volume knob as a sort of overall “Gain” control. Roll it back to soften and even clean up the fuzz.
Lastly and perhaps most important, the circuit itself can’t just be thrown together, even going by the exact schematic or layout. There are certain parameters that need careful attention and further tweaking, particularly finding a pair of transistors with the hFE and leakage that also play well with one another. This is a large reason as to why some of the original vintage FF pedals were absolute magic and others made with the same components were just ok at best.
All that said, I can ensure you this particular pedal has been very carefully built and biased in order to open up its fullest potential. If you like the Fuzz Face, I think you’re going to really like this. Thank you for checking it out!
Controls are Volume, Fuzz and Bias (value of the Bias potentiometer increased for a wider range of control). Three-way toggle is Input that selects between three different input capacitors.
There are also two trimpot controls internally. One on the left is labeled clean that works similarly to your guitars volume knob. The other biases Q2 and works in conjunction with the external Bias knob-this has been set so the external Bias knob is around 4.8v-5.1v when at the noon position, giving you a very useable sweep in either direction.
