I was working at a guitar store here in Tucson in 1973 when a young gentleman came in to sell his Stratocaster. He needed $160.00 for a motorcycle repair and it was his father's guitar.
It was a white 1956 Stratocaster with a matching headstock. All he knew about it was that his dad bought it new in '56 and sent it back to Fender in 1960. When he got it back it was Arctic White with a matching headstock. Fender really never did any matching headstock Stratocasters in the 50's and I have never seen one before or since. I am not sure how many 50's Stratocasters Fender refinished with matching headstocks in the early 60's but I have not seen any others as well. This guitar also had one of the most comfortable even tapered necks I have ever played. It just felt like it fit in your hand like it belonged there. At the time I had it re-fretted with large frets which was the popular thing to do at the time. The large frets gave this guitar the most amazing even sound with incredible sustain and made it incredibly easy to bend strings.
I have purchased and sold hundreds of “Pre CBS” Stratocasters in the past 40 years and this has been my absolute favorite over the years. Fender took exact measurements of the neck shape and reproduced the neck wear on the back of the neck so it feels just like my original 56. The guitar acoustically sounds big, even and rings forever. Plugged in you are transported back to the 50's
