Spohn OM with moonspruce top and figured old growth mahogany Back and sides.
The fretboard, bridge, and heel cap are Wenge. All of the body binding, the back strip, and end graft are Wenge as well. There is figured mahogany purfling with black and white line borders. Head cap is mahogany that matches the back and sides. The rosette is one of Max’s custom designed modern masterpieces, with ebony and light wood stringing and burl wood. Scheller tuners with ebony buttons.
This guitar is exquisite to hear and to see. Max Spohn apprenticed with Raymond Kraut. The influence from Somogyi through Kraut to Spohn is evident in every aspect of this guitar. The aesthetic choices all flow from this lineage but are brought forward in Max’s own creative way. The guitar plays very easily. The neck has a flat finish and a comfortable medium C shape. The heel is shaped so access to higher frets is effortless. The nut is scalloped And the saddle is extra wide to allow for very precise intonation. The bridge is Max’s own design in a pinless configuration allowing for easy string changes. Comes with a BAM case. These cases are very light weight and this one functions perfectly.
Now to the sound. Max uses radial bracing. This allows the top to vibrate freely and allows the moon spruce to produce a very rich tone. The mahogany body exerts a clarity to the tone and creates incredible note separation. The tone leaps out with a gentle touch, and never lets up with the loudest strumming. This guitar can be played much louder than you would think from its size. Notes are very even across the fretboard. The bass is full and precise, and the highs ring with a lush bell like sound. Don’t take my word for it, watch the YouTube video. This is Peter Finger who originally sold the guitar in Germany. At the end of the video he plays his song again with photos of the guitar being built. You can see the amazing bracing design in one of these photos. And Peter plays better than I could to truly show what this instrument can do.
In excellent condition with very minimal fret wear and very light strumming marks from my thumb pick. I added strap lock buttons to the heel and back.
It is difficult to accurately describe the craftsmanship of this guitar. Please zoom in to the photos to better study all the details and the flawless execution. An instrument that is handmade by one artist is rare. Max Spohn is still quite young and early in his career. I expect his guitars to increase in value, especially as demand increases and his waitlist gets longer.
