This is a guitar I started in 2023 and have been working on ever since. I just completed it in December of 2024.
I was deeply inspired by Gary Southwell's A Series guitar and initially set off to copy it as a learning experience. I really was inspired by his asymmetrical design ideas. So as I went I kept adding in bits of asymmetry to what you see here.
Ultimately this is a nylon string classical guitar with a 660/640mm multiscale neck.
Top: Sitka Spruce
Back and sides: Pau Rosa
Binding: Curly Maple/Paduak
Neck: American Cherry
Headstock: Padauk
Headplate: Indian Rosewood
Fingerboard: Curly Koa
Finish: Oil over Epoxy (Ken Parker style)
It has a lot of features that make it unique:
1) This guitar features "structured sides" as pioneered by Sergei Dejonge in Canada and then refined by Michael Kennedy and Jeremy Clark in Montreal. Put simply, the sides are laminated with a 6mm inner core which makes ultimately for an 8mm thick side assembly. This makes for incredibly stiff sides, which allow the top to be a bit thinner and provide a rigid foundation for the top to vibrate. Since the sides are so rigid, the vibrations of the strings stays in the top, where they make the most sound.
2) The neck is adjustable via a small allen nut in the fingerboard surface. So the action on the guitar is adjustable to any string height you desire. This is a feature on all of my guitars and personally I would prefer not to own any guitars without this. It eliminates the need for the guitar ever to have a neck reset and assures that the guitar will play its best regardless of the weather.
3) The bracing is a modern classical lattice. The braces and the top are Sitka spruce.
4) The back is "live braced" in the Trevor Gore pattern.
It is a great sounding guitar. It definitely takes some getting used to but ultimately it is an easy playing instrument.
I made a video explaining a lot of the guitar that's attached.
I should mention one thing I forgot, after making the guitar there were three cracks that opened up in the back that winter. The wood was well seasoned and had been in my shop for several years. I was later told that Pau Rosa has a tendency to crack in the first year a guitar is made. I waited till this winter to repair the cracks in the back and there don't seem to be any more developing but in the interests of full disclosure, it is possible there could be more back cracks. As you can see the wood is very beautiful so perhaps that's the price for having something so beautiful.
I attached a video of a great classical player playing this guitar in a bar...very beautiful playing. There's a walk through on the youtube channel as well if you look for it.
