Steve’s Notes: This set is from my personal collection. As many of you know, I don’t feel as if I “own” the majority of the drums in my collection. I prefer to think of myself as the current “caretaker”. So, periodically I select items from my collection and make them available to the next caretaker. This set is one of those items.

This set has a lot of great history. I acquired this set directly from Joe Morello and his wife Jean when I helped him sell through many of his drums and cymbals. This is one of Joe’s last sets. It is a DW set and this one is in champagne sparkle rather than his signature silver sparkle. The DW set is 9x13, two 16” toms (one 14” deep and one 16” deep), 22” bass drum and 5x14 Craviotto/DW snare drum.

- This snare was one of Joe’s favorites. I have a video linked here that explains when and where the set was used.

- There is also a video available on YouTube showing Joe playing this set for the 1994 recording of the Burning for Buddy album. He’s playing “A Train”.

- The set was also used for the Around The Kit video.

- And, the snare from this set was used by Joe in a November of 1996 concert. Joe’s band opened for Dave Brubeck at the Community Theater in Morristown, NJ. Joe was using this snare with a different kit. He then sat in with Brubeck and they performed Take Five and A Train.

Wonderful set here with some nice history. Of course, this set wasn’t used during Joe’s most prolific period (late 50s through 70s), so it is priced accordingly, but it is a set that he used and loved in his later days. I previously sold what I consider to be the two most important Morello sets, (Brubeck era Ludwig set and the Ludwig set used for the 25th reunion of the original Brubeck quartet), which of course were priced exponentially higher than this set. The Brubeck era kit resides in the Charlie Watts collection and the 25th Anniversary kit is currently owned by a private investor. This DW set with the Craviotto snare is, in my opinion, an excellent choice for any Joe Morello fan, or as a cornerstone piece for a superb collection.
