89-91 Charvel Fusion Deluxe, heavily modified.

This belonged to my brother in law and came to me after he passed. He was the only owner. He bought it brand new from Ace Music in Dayton Ohio. Before I get into the description let me list the hardware specs.

  • Jackson J-200R neck pickup
  • DiMarzio bridge pickup (unknown model)
  • Schaller bridge and stoptail
  • original Charvel 'chainsaw' case
  • 24.75" neck scale (a la GIbson, etc)
  • Bourns low friction volume pot

Obviously, Bill really messed with this guitar over the years, from having the Floyd professionally replaced with a stoptail to whatever weird idea he had for carving the body shape, as well as some sort of 'scalloping' on the upper frets. I hadn't spent much time with him in the years prior to his exit, so I have no idea why he did any of this or what he hoped to accomplish. He had almost completely stopped playing electric and moved onto classical guitar exclusively about 10-15 years ago, so this guitar was probably not played much in all that time.

Looks aside, after I made some minor repairs to it it plays and sounds great. I had to replace the neck pickup as the original one was broken (its included) and was lucky enough to find a period correct J-200 for the job. I also replaced the stock vol pot as it was frozen and unuseable. The DiMarzio is almost definitely not original, but I'm not sure. There is no model # marked on the back, which is often an indicator of OEM installs, but who knows.

The case is also heavily graffitied and 'customized', but all the latches and hinges are intact (a miracle!) and it works properly.

Both the guitar and the case smell heavily of patchouli as Bill practically bathed in the stuff, so keep that in mind.

I can't keep it around anymore because it upsets my wife (Bill was her younger brother, understandable), and I don't play anymore, anyway. Probably the neck, case, and hardware are the only things of any value. I don't have the woodworking skills to know if the body can be salvaged or restored, but I'm selling it complete so I can get it out of my house. As I said, it's completely playable as is, it's just ugly.

The back of the neck is super smooth and fast, though there are some divots and dings on the frets. It looks like the frets have enough meat left for a proper filing and crowning, but YMMV. The headstock tip is rounded over, and I don't know if that was to fix a chip or just some other weird idea he had.

I have no idea what a fair price would be, so please feel free to make offers. I've seen these old 'toothpaste' logo Charvel necks sell for as much as 500$, and this is a really nice one. The listing price will be a combination of average prices for the vintage parts and case, and is flexible.

It will be properly packaged and insured for shipping.

As always, ask questions before bidding, I'm always happy to take more photos if there's anything specific you want to see. My photography skills really suck and my camera isn't much better, but I'll do what I can. I've explained all details as best as I can, and the photos should provide the rest. That said, this is an 'as-is' auction. At minimum, expect to need to setup the instrument to your personal preferences after shipping.

This is a used guitar, and I am not a luthier. There may be issues with this instrument that I do not have the skill to identify or even be aware of. Expect to need to do at least a 'personal preference' setup when it arrives, as usual with any shipped used guitar. Each of my listings is described to the best of my ability, and if you have any questions that I did not address in the listing or photos, please ask before bidding. Thanks!

All reasonable offers considered.

I generally ship the next business day after receiving payment, but there will be exceptions.

This is listed locally and in other places online, so this listing will be closed if it sells elsewhere.
