For sale, we have what we believe is a late '50s Danelectro short horn double cutaway. The previous owner modified the lower cutaway, taped the top, and sealed that in with a clear-coat. It was the '80s, what can we say...
Details:
Neck - Front of the coke bottle headstock looks like it was over-sprayed when the body was done. Functional tuners, bushings and 1-5/8" wide aluminum nut look original. Side and top dots are intact, the Brazilian fingerboard and frets are in very good shape. Notes ring clear on nearly all frets with the exception of the 5th and 6th strings up past the 16th fret due to a slight hump over the body in that area. There is wood rash on the back of the poplar neck between frets 9 to 11.
Body and Electronics - What look to be the original lipstick pups and electronics are functioning properly. Solder joints look untouched. CTS Pots are dated 1958. Carling selector switch. Pyramid USA caps. Tops of the tone knobs and the edge of the volume rings were painted yellow. All the hardware appears correct for when this guitar was made. Looks like the original black sparkle paint under the clear coat.
Playability and Sound - This is a nice easy/comfortable player, with a medium action and very clear, resonant voicing. The lipstick single coil pups sound jangly and wonderful in this writers opinion.
Weight - 5.8 lbs
This instrument is playable as is. For anyone working on a restoration it presents a nice collection of period appropriate parts. Thanks for looking.
