Great electric cello with some modest upgrades! Lightly used.
So, here's the deal. I'm not much of a cellist – I'm an amateur adult early intermediate player, with an acoustic cello as well. I thought I would buy this to allow me to practice in my apartment late at night without bothering neighbors. Truthfully, my technique is not good enough for me to translate well between the two, so when I return to my acoustic cello I feel sometimes a little lost with my left hand. I think it's doing my technique more harm than good at the stage I am at by going between the two instruments. I prefer my acoustic cello in the end (after all, that is why I started playing), and while I thought it would be fun to rock out with guitar pedals and effects, I don't see myself doing that effectively well with this instrument any time soon. Maybe one day when I'm ready I'll get an electric cello again, but in the meantime I could use the space and money and would rather see this off to a good home!
The minor upgrades include:
1. I had my luthier (Finlay & Gage) re-cut the stock bridge. I was going to have them replace it with a fancy one originally, but they talked me down from that expense suggesting that a minor re-cut would help the strings sit and sound better than the way it comes setup from the factory.
2. I really did not like the stock strings, they felt and sounded like barb wire. Really cheap feeling. So I replaced the C & G with Jargar, and the A & D with Pirasto Passione. I'd been quite happy with how they feel and sound.
3. Not exactly an upgrade but I won't need the stand you see in the photo, so I'm happy to include. It's a really nice stand (Hercules, $90 new), and after trying a few it was the only one I found which could accomodate the electric cello correctly, since many other cello stands have a wider base designed with acoustic cellos in mind, whereas the silent cello is obviously very thin at the bottom.
The battery on-board pre-amp works great, and it even comes with a dial for on-board reverb which is great, as you can put on headphones and play silently but it sounds a lot more rich and spacious, closer to an acoustic cello.
It also comes with a soft carrying case and headphones (never used), which are not pictured.
Brand new I bought this cello from Sweetwater where it retails for $2,096. I think with the bridge and string upgrades, considering that I have barely played it and it's never left the house, that $2K is a fair price.
Currently I have this set to local pick-up in NYC only; but if you're not nearby and very interested, let me know where you're located, and I might consider looking into the rates for that.
Thanks for looking!
