Tokyo Tape Music Center is a play on the San Francisco Tape Music Center. And that makes sense when you consider that almost all of the modules that Tokyo Tape Music Center produces are eurorack clones of Don Buchla’s original 100 series of modules. This is the 158 sine / sawtooth generator—the core of the system. You probably already know about subtractive versus additive synthesis aka east coast versus west coast aka Bob Moog versus Don Buchla aka Biggie versus Tupac. But if not, basically Buchla‘s 158 gives you a clean sine wave with the knob to the left and a sawtooth with it to the right. Anything in between is a blend of the two. So it’s kind of like a low pass filter, but you are actually adding complexity to the waveform rather than revealing more of the already complex harmonics you’re hiding. Plus you can frequency modulate it! Since it’s a dual module, I like taking one of the outputs from one oscillator and running that into the frequency modulation or the pitch modulation. Run that into a low pass gate and you’re playing Buchla’s bongos. Enjoy!
