Here we have a finished project I started about 6 months ago. Should have took a before picture but did not dang it, because she sure turned out GOOD! Yes here we have an early 1970 Gibson EBO bass with the slotted headstock. This 55 year old Gibson bass has stood the test of time and is structurally very solid. I got the bass from a customer and it was pretty much stripped down to the bare flat mahogany body and someone painted the back of the neck and headstock a flat black. I saw a lot of potential. So I had my paint guy spray the bass original Dupont Pelham Blue an original Gibson custom color which in 10-20 years will turn into a dark green. I told him not to go crazy as I was not after an expensive flawless finish. I just wanted it to look nice and it turned out better that I had expected wioth it';s share of painted over dings as you can see in the pictures.
Hugh Bray is a very talented bass builder and painter as well. I have sold a dozen of his hand made copy and original basses and he has refinished quite a few of my custom color vintage guitars and basses in the past 20 plus years. It is a fact also that he built a custom ordered bass for Kenny Rodger's bass player who still plays that bass today.
So this EBO is all original except for the finish work, the replacement Stew Mac nickel bridge saddles, and 1 of the machine heads that is identical to the other 3 Gibson tuners except it says Schaller. There are 2 replaced wires as you can see in the wiring harness cavity that had gone missing and the 2 guitar strap pins match, but I had to add them as it came in with none. That is it. The rest of the bass is original. I did use up my last original Gibson decal. The CTS pots read 1377010 or the 10th. week of 1970. The serial number got lost when it was stripped down before we got it. The frets are like almost new with no pitting and only the very slightest of hard to see signs of wear in the first few frets. The original nut is 1 1/2" wide. Scale length is 30 1/2".
I set the bass up with some fresh Ernie Ball round wounds .45-1.05 strings after seasoning the fretboard. The bass plays so nice with a nice easy string action and the TONE is superb, full, and deep like you would expect from an EBO with that big ol' humbucker. I love the power and sound of these old Gibson basses just about the same as my 59' P bass I have had for over 40 years.
You are going to love this bass!

Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for the recent "Miracle in Motor City" Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we just sold Billy Joel's bassist an SG he is in love with. Just last month 2-9-2024, Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that 2-12-2024 we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!
We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling guitars and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone, who had an apartment a block down from my house.
