Darren Hippner Bernabe Model Model Classical Guitar (2023), made in Point Roberts, WA., serial # 1162, natural lacquer finish, Mexican Kingwood ( Camatillo ) Back and Sides, Red Cedar Top; Spanish Cedar Neck with Gabon Ebony Fingerboard, black hard shell case.
Darren R. Hippner builds guitars all by himself in his own one man shop. There are no associates, apprentices, students, or employees; every Hippner guitar is handcrafted by Darren alone using primarily hand tools. This is a 2023 Bernabe model with a Red Cedar top, Mexican Kingwood (Camatillo) back and sides mated to a Spanish Cedar Neck with a Gabon Ebony Fingerboard. It has a Snakewood bridge with double tie holes, Brazilian rosewood head stock facing and body bindings. The instrument is hand-finished in lacquer. The headstock is fitted with black chrome Schaller tuners with wooden buttons.
Darren has been a professional luthier building guitars full time for 30 years since 1994. His custom guitars include a wide variety of designs such as Torres, Hauser, Ramirez & Fleta Concert models, 8-String guitars, double top and lattice braced classicals, Steel-string acoustic dreadnaughts, parlour & 12-Strings using a wide variety of premium tonewoods. He handcrafts all of his instruments himself, using basic wood shop machinery and hand tools. By working alone, he has total control over every phase of building and can produce consistently fine musical instruments. He maximizes the potential of each piece of wood by voicing the wood and shaping the thickness graduations individually using touch, feel & tap-tones, the same way old master Italian violin luthiers and master Spanish guitar luthiers worked.
This is the first Hippner guitar we have handled and it is a very good sounding instrument with a rich, deep sound that retains excellent projection. It is very nicely made and has a pleasingly individual aesthetic.
Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 14 7/8 in. (37.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/16 in. (10.3 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 5/8 in. (651 mm.). Width of nut is 2 1/16 in. (52 mm.).
This very recently built guitar shows some light use with minor play and handling wear but does have one repair, likely caused by material failure on the tail end of the instrument. On either side of the tailblock fissures opened in the grain of the side wood that have been sealed with epoxy; this is a bit unsightly (although in an inconspicuous spot) but does not present any further structural issue. Other than this the guitar is completely solid and an excellent playing and sounding instrument. Excellent - Condition.
