It was a pleasure having this fine vintage German instrument in my shop. August Liebich Strad model violins are scarce in good condition as the partnership of Ernst Heinrich Roth and Max Lederer was fairly short-lived, spanning 1890 - 1902. Someone informed me that the R&L branding is missing from this violin's label, and therefore, I will only say that I suspect it to be a Roth & Lederer violin. The tonewood selection is magnificent, especially the beautiful one-piece tiger maple back. The violin needed some help to return to a playing condition and was one of a series of five rib repair instruments that I completed this spring. The bottom ribs were not cracked but were badly bulging and fully separated from top/back/endpin seam. I reformed them using steam and an elastic strap and completed the repair with hot hide glue and clamps (see photos). Two saddle crack repairs on the top, 1" and 3", were also reglued and touched up with some varnish to protect the repair (see photos). A small rib chip was also repaired at one of the c bout corners. I dressed and gapped the original ebony fingerboard and refitted the vintage maple bridge that arrived with the instrument. The repairs remain visible but not distracting, and both rib and top repairs are sound. Additional work on the instrument included cleaning up a large glue puddle, which can still be seen in the last borescope photo, with about 80% of the glue removed with warm water and Q tips. Despite the repair work, the instrument is in very good condition overall, with very little playing wear. The fittings are all original, with the exception of the ebony lathe-fitted pegs with brass dot finials selected to match the originals (the two originals that were with the violin are included). The original case is in good useable condition, as is the bow, which may also be original to the violin outfit. It is almost perfectly straight, has good camber, and has new hair. I selected new Tonica strings for the instrument, which produce a beautiful, rich, warm tone across all four strings with enough power to be a soloist violin. This would be a wonderful instrument for an advanced player seeking a vintage German workshop violin of excellent quality. Since tone evaluation is subjective, please listen to the sound sample video and judge for yourself. The lack of playing wear on the violin indicates that it was likely damaged early in life and stowed away for perhaps a hundred years.

I am a lifelong woodworker from a family of musicians (yep, that's my son playing in the video:) with a love for these old instruments. I am not a storefront, and I do not charge high storefront prices for my work. As such, I do not wish to enter into returns, so please view the high-resolution photos carefully, ask questions, and watch/listen to the video before purchasing. I only sell and ship to the lower 48 states.

*Sorry, I do not sell to shops. If you represent a shop or are a re-seller looking to flip this violin, please move on.

**This bow is out for a rehair. This violin outfit will not be able to ship until 12/1.
