I just had the bass re-adjusted, re-set up, and blessed with a straight neck by the best master luthier in Michigan, my good friend and neighbor, Mike Koontz of Koontz Guitar Repair. It just does not get any better than this. Mike has been dealing with, setting up, dressing, and re-fretting guitars for the the major league guitar players in the music business for over 50 years. Here we have a really fine 1966 Gibson Thunderbird ll bass that has been professionally refinished in a Burgundy Mist Metallic nitro finish with a white undercoat. With only a grand total of just over 1,100 Thunderbird ll basses ever made and only 361 made in 1966, this rare bass is fully original except for the parchment re-issue pickguard and the new CTS pots and wiring. All the rest of the bass and parts are original .

The refinishing job was done by my long time customer Hugh Bray who has been building and painting custom made basses for decades. I have sold dozens of his 1 of a kind basses over the years and in fact have up for sale right now with 2 of them listed right here on Reverb.com. He also built a custom bass for Kenny Rogers bass player a long time ago and he still uses that bass today.

NOTE: The first picture was shot inside the shop whereas the rest were shot outside in the sun. There are 3 of Hugh's basses in that first picture as well.

This bass has a top notch paint job.

I set the bass all up basically before I turned it over to Mike Koontz, with a fresh set of Ernie Ball round wound strings .45-.105 after cleaning and seasoning the rosewood fret board and it plays really nice and smooth with a good adjustable string height and superb TONE. The neck has a great feel being a bit on the chunky side but no too thick and that pickup belts out with some serious and brutal lows when wanted.

So I started this labor of love 6 months ago with the stripped down body and a bag of original parts. I showed a before picture of it stripped all the way down to the wood. I am including an extra Gibson plastic logo and a new replacement nut as well. I am very happy with the results,,, finally. Those jumbo frets and Brazilian rosewood fretboard show 'no' wear whatsoever.

By the way, when I got the stripped down bass there had been a pro repaired crack done long ago at the headstock. When you look there now you would not think there ever was one. Sometimes that line shows up later on down the road. There is also 1 extra guitar strap pin hole for side mounting a guitar strap.

The bass comes with the pictured Epiphone reversed T Bird bass case. I had to modify the interior to fit this non reverse 66' and the case turned out quite well as the bass fits nice and snug.
