Up for sale is a stunning ribbon microphone made in 1963 crafted by Aiwa, modeled after the revered RCA BK5. The VM-18 stands out for its reputation as a more natural-sounding counterpart to the BK5, offering a unique sonic character that enthusiasts are sure to appreciate. Notably, the ribbon in this microphone has been professionally replaced, resulting in a remarkably smooth and full sound just like it did on day one.
Previously, the microphone exhibited some boxiness in terms of sound due to ribbon stretching, but with the replacement, it now delivers flawless audio reproduction. Included with the microphone is the original mounting hardware, featuring a design reminiscent of the American Microphone Company.
It's worth mentioning that the filter switch has a slight wobble and is non-functional. However, this does not diminish the microphone's lush bass response; any necessary adjustments can easily be made using EQ. Lastly, this microphone has a newly replaced cable and it ships with a stand adapter.
