Fender Japan TL62-US OLB 2013 w/ Monty's '68 Telecaster Raw Nickel Set

This is part of a series of MIJ guitars that we have significantly upgraded in-house. In order to realize this guitars full potential, we have replaced the pickups with a set of Monty's '68 Telecaster pickups, alongside replacing the stock potentiometers with CTS 1MΩ , swapping out the original capacitor for a better sounding large ceramic type .05uF and changed the wiring to vintage style pushcloth wire. Additionally, we have installed a new polished bone nut for increased sustain, tuning stability and a better overall playing feel.

With its alder body, maple neck with slab rosewood board, threaded nickel plated steel saddles and Old Lake Placid Blue finish the TL62-US is an obvious nod to the 1962 Telecaster. Extremely resonant, with a manageble weight and a very comfortable slim oval neck profile, this Made In Japan instrument punches well above its weight as-is but with our improvements it now a truly great guitar. Monty's 68 Telecaster pickups are a perfect sonic fit for this model with a wonderful balance of chime, clarity, warmth & power. All three positions sound absolutely stellar with an outstanding neck pickup that has none of the underwhelming dullness that telecaster neck pickups are notorious for.

Cosmetically, this guitar has a few dings, mostly on the back of the body, but not much else to speak of with very little playing wear, an almost pristine scratchplate and almost no hardware corrosion.

Comes with a non-original softcase and Monty's box. The original pickups are not included.

Monty's is a guitar repair/luthier/pickup winder headed by one Matt Gleeson in the UK who got his start in London as a much sought after guitar repairman and technician before branching out on his own and creating the Monty's brand. Here's their take on the '68 Telecaster pickups:

"Much like their Strat counterparts, late 60’s tele pickups have a slightly lower output and simply unrivalled top-end chime. This comes from their thinner magnets, which combine with the use of less wire to give a slightly narrower coil. This scoops out the mids slightly and boosts the top end, making these pickups wonderful for sparkling cleans. They also sound great driven, the bridge pickup, in particular, having a gloriously edgy top-end that manages to be bright without ever straying into ‘ice-pick’ territory. This gives these pickups real attitude and combines with their outstanding responsiveness to make them an incredibly rewarding set to play.

Just like the originals, these pickups are lacquer potted. This means that, rather than being dipped in wax, the coil is sealed with a very thin layer of lacquer. This keeps all but the very outside of the coil free from wax, resulting in an incredibly dynamic, responsive pickup. Traditionally, the downside of this potting technique is that many vintage examples get very microphonic. We’ve rectified this by giving the metalwork a light wax treatment, ensuring that these pickups won’t start squealing when you turn the gain up without compromising on their unique lacquer potted character.

Hand-wound here in the UK using period-correct 43-gauge (neck) and 42-gauge (bridge) Plain Enamel wire & alnico V magnets wound to around 6.8k in the neck and 6.6k at the bridge."
