In some areas of West and Central Africa, the making of "thumb pianos" (lamellophones) with bamboo tines preceded the making of those with iron. In fact, the use of bamboo in crafting the instrument continues to this day in certain societies. This offering by Pan-African Arts features seven bamboo tines which are mounted on a wooden soundboard, which in turn is affixed to a gourd resonator.
