Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome.
You are looking at a somewhat rare Shure Brother's 737 A model microphone produced during the 1940's through the 1960's. This particular model was an early 1st generation late 40's to mid 50's era model and nicknamed "The Waffle Iron" for obvious reasons with it's clever and charismatic design. It comes with the period desk stand in which to display.
Pic # 2 is from an old Shure catalog I have showing the mics basic specs.
This mic particular model was used in the older 1980's flick La Bamba and is one of the most outrageous and beautiful designs to come from Shure Brothers over the years.
It should be noted that the mic is it has been tested and no longer works. The original crystal element inside is dead so this mic should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only. This was an Evanston model so it would have been sold sometime between 1956 and 1960 just before the mic was changed slightly in design.
The satin chrome finish has typical lite cosmetic wear associated for a 737A of this age but still pretty dang nice as seen in the pics provided. This specimen has an amazing luster to it as well. There are spots of pitting on the mic here and there. No deep scratches or dents however. Let the pics be your guide. The front and rear inner blue silk screens are evenly colored as are the side silk screens. It's free of any holes or rips.
The royal blue Shure badge looks very nice being completely legible. The joint mechanism works perfectly. The threads for the stand and cable as good as they get.
All 737 A model microphones were equipped with a crystal elements. The element in this is 737A was a sophisticated uni-directional element but again, non-working.
The mic is solid with no loose pieces inside or out. These mics are notorious for having a loose element inside. I fix this problem so that nothing rattles around by replacing the foam mounts with new ones. I would rate this physically a very conservative 7 + on a scale of 1 - 10.
MICROPHONE STAND IS INCLUDED...
The stand is a period unknown model microphone desk stand. The stand has a heavy cast iron base with an original hammered silver painted finish and polished chrome stem / riser. This model is quite old and most likely a 1930's or 40's era stand. There are no obvious markings so I can only assume which company made this but because of the heavier weight it makes a very good platform for the mic despite it's smaller size. The stand thread itself is universal and any mic or mic clip will technically mate to the top of it.
This particular stand has typical cosmetic wear as you can see. Some small scuff marks, scratches and tiny paint chips. There is are no dents or fractures on this stand but the polished chrome stem shows far less wear. Please let the detailed pictures be your guide.
Mic stand is appx 4 inches tall X 3 1/2 inches wide. With the mic on top it's appx 10 inches tall.
Mic stand is a true 7 on a scale of 1 - 10.
If you are a serious collector of vintage Americans mics then you know what a unique mic this is. She'll make an awesome display piece anywhere it sits in the home, studio or office.
