Peter Harlan (Hans Jorrdan) theorbo (Renaissance lute) from 1927 - a real rarity!
Peter Harlan (1889-1966) was an important German musician and instrument maker. He learned to make guitars in Markneukirchen and founded his own workshop where he and his employees (including Hans Jordan) mainly made historical musical instruments. Harlan promoted domestic and youth music throughout Germany and was a true pioneer in instrument making. After 1945, he rented Sternberg Castle and ran music training courses there and resumed instrument making there after the Second World War.
Hans Jordan himself is one of the most famous German lute makers. He was employed by Peter Harlan in his younger years but later became self-employed.
This fine theorbo was built by Hans Jordan under Peter Harlan in 1927. The instrument is in excellent condition and was restored in 1988 by Dieter Hense (himself a great expert in guitar and lute making). During this overhaul, the top and bridge were replaced and the neck realigned.
The theorbo has a scale length of 640 mm. It has a spruce top and a maple body. It is in very good and well-kept condition and is ready to be played immediately. The instrument has been checked by our luthier.
It comes with a custom-made case, which was made for the instrument after the restoration by Dieter Hense. Unfortunately we don't have new strings for this instrument.
