2020 Juan Hernandez (Friederich model) Classical Guitar

Solid Cedar Top

Solid Indian Rosewood Back and Sides

Bone Nut (51.5 mm) and Bone Saddle

650 mm Scale Length

This guitar was made in the Juan Hernandez shop in Spain and is signed by Alberto Hernandez on the label. This is one of their high-end models and is a rare one. I have only seen two other ones over the past decade, so it doesn’t come up for sale often. I don’t think that they make this model anymore as I don’t see it listed on their web site. It is possible that this model is made to order only. As a comparison, the Torres model they now make sells new for about $4,000 USD. This is a similar level guitar.

The condition of the guitar is excellent with only a couple of small marks on it which I have tried to show in the last two pictures. They are little smudges on the finish (one on the top and the other one on the bridge). The tuners on it are Gotoh and they work very well and a reliable and smooth set of tuners. The finish on the guitar is some kind of lacquer but I don’t know what kind. It is not French-polished as far as I can tell.

The action is set at 2.75 mm on the 1st string and 3.75 mm on the 6th string at the 12th fret. The saddle sticks out 2.0 mm on the treble side and 2.7 mm on the bass side. This is a standard classical action height. In terms of playability, the guitar is a joy to play with no issues anywhere on the neck.

The sound of the guitar is very strong with a very good balance between bass and treble. It has very good volume and sustain. There is great clarity in the trebles – more so than let’s say in the sound of a Rodriguez model guitar. This is a result of the stiffer internal bracing of the Friederich model compared to most other traditionally braced cedar top guitars.

The sound sample video was recorded with a set of Savarez 500CR normal tension nylon strings. These are among the most generic nylon strings available and allow the guitar to bring out its voice without coloring it. This guitar does not need carbon strings to sound great. It has more than enough volume and clarity with the most basic nylon strings.

For a sound sample please see the youtube video from this posting.

Here is what you get when you buy a guitar from me. I have been playing classical guitar since I was a kid and continue to play actively on a daily basis. As a result every guitar I sell has a video that showcases its sound recorded with decent microphones. Every guitar I buy goes through thorough cleaning and setup to ensure its playability is up to my standard. Adjustments are made to the nut and saddle or new ones made depending on their condition, the frets are levelled, crowned and polished and the fingerboard is conditioned, and sometimes other adjustments are made as required. It does take time to do these things (several hours in fact) but as a result, the guitars I sell are playable right out of the case even though some are 40-50 years old.

I will ship to Canada and the Continental United States. The guitar will be shipped well packed with strings loosened in a new navy-blue Crossrock Fiberglass case as seen in the pictures. The case comes with straps and can be carried as a backpack too. I have bought and sold a long list of classical guitars over the years, so buy with confidence.

PS: You can find one more demo video of this exact model guitar if you search on youtube by "Juan Hernandez Friedrich". Yes, they have misspelled "Friederich" (in that video it's "Friedrich").
