Be the only kid on your block with a Moonsnake!
This started as an 8-channel snake of some description (I don't remember the brand or configuration); what looks like a chromed baby moon hubcap is in fact a chromed baby moon hubcap, from the auto parts store. I needed a stage box for the end of the snake, and thought this would look cool.
Specs and tech. The snake cable is made by Alden; the individual channels are proper 2-conductor with stranded ground, plus braided shield, in color-coded PVC jacket. This isn't the cheap stuff.
It's all wired tip-sleeve (for mono/hi-z application), but all 3 conductors are there if you wanted to go TRS for stereo/balanced. Plugs are Switchcraft 280; plug ends of channels are shrink-tube strain-relieved, with imprinted channel numbers. I soldered it all together (back when I believed a good solder joint was a sacred rite). Just lookit those solder points, the neat cable dressing. MAN, I do good work.
Note that channels 2 and 6 have a pair of parallel inputs. I don't remember why.
Lengths of clear surgical tubing jacket the individual channels for neatness at both ends, reinforced at joints with shrink tubing. I was a little nutty, maybe.
Jacks on hubcap are labeled with press-vinyl. I might not have chosen the most readable typeface.
Note: the hubcap is very light - the whole 15' snake weighs no more than 3 lbs. As it is, it's easily dragged around the floor (or any surface you put it on.) I'd always intended to screw a bottom (probably 3/4" plywood) to the assembly with some deadweight attached, to keep the hubcap in place when in use. You'll probably want to do that.
This was intended as a front-of-stage patch panel to plug in all my instruments - outputs from stereo pedal board, multiple acoustic instruments, keyboards - for a single neat run to the backline, rather than the usual mess. I thought it would be a touch of chromey splendor there at my feet.
Come on, you know you've always wanted one of these.
