Vintage 1955 Harmony H-42 Stratotone Newport Electric Guitar w/ Case! Psychedelic Paint Job!

Up for sale is this vintage 1955 Harmony H-42 Stratotone Newport electric guitar. This one came in a few weeks ago and everyone collectively turned their heads to admire the real-deal 1960's psychedelic paint job. When we took this one in, I had me in mind but you can't keep them all and I've already kept way too many, so here we go...

Here's the story with this one via the long-time owner: "My buddy Harold gave me The Stratotone. He got drafted in spring of 1967. He said he wanted me to have it, in case he didn’t make it back.

In the ‘Summer of Love’, 1967, me and my bass player decided to paint it. We had seen Clapton’s 'The Fool' guitar and this was our Stratotone version.

First, we removed the aluminum door threshold binding, that was always catching on something. Then I think we sprayed painted it a metallic green. Aerosol spray paint was new back then. The first color wasn’t what we wanted, so we re-sprayed it black. Then we took Testor’s model car paint and proceeded to attempt to do a psychedelic paint job on it.

We were limited by our ability to draw and paint. I’ve kept this guitar in climate controlled storage since then. Harold did make it back from Vietnam, but didn’t return to music."

So there's the story. Other than the refin (which isn't the best quality as noted, there's also some flaking on one of the sides, pictured), nut, one pickguard screw, and missing aluminum binding, the instrument is original. The original concentric pot dates to mid-1955 and the original pickup sounds great, these LOVE high gain amplifiers and a slide.

The playability is average for what it is: high action and destined for slide. If that's what you're looking for, it's got the magic. If you're looking for a vintage guitar with good action and fretwork, this one isn't for you.

A later, but vintage 1960's two-tone Harmony softshell case is included. The guitar fits loosely inside but will be well-packed to ensure safe shipping. It's not every day that you get a chance at something like this, so don't miss out...
