Ludwig 14"x5" 410 Super Sensitive Snare Drum. Early 1960s Pre-Serial Number - Chrome Over Aluminum.
At first glance, you'd assume this drum had the coveted Ludwig pre-serial number chrome over brass shell. It has all the indicators including the pre-serial number keystone badge, red felt muffler and a crimped snare bed. On a closer look you'll see some pitting in the chrome on the shell. That's the giveaway! The chrome over brass shells rarely pit. Chrome over aluminum shells pit pretty much.
So this drum is from the early 60s transition period when Ludwig was transitioning to the aluminum shell that has become the standard of the industry ever since. It's a great drum that marks a significant milepost in the evolution of the most popular snare drum shell of all time.
You can see the pitting in the photos. Structurally mechanically there are no issues. Everything works exactly as intended. New Remo Ambassadors on bottom and top. PureSound snare wires. This drum plays like a champ!
