E.U. Wurlitzer and Co. distributed all types of musical products from ukuleles to giant pipe organs in the first half of the 20th century. Not only did they sell products from popular makers, but they also had instruments made to sell under the Wurlitzer brand.
This exquisite example with eye-dazzling appointments was made for Wurlitzer by the Regal Company of Chicago. Its unique peg head is bound in maple and decorated with an intricate pearl inlaid vine that covers all but the tuning machine posts. The ebonized fingerboard is impressively bound in maple and inlaid with an elaborate pearl vine known as the “Tree of Life”. Its oval sound hole is trimmed in herringbone surrounded by outer and inner rings of rope binding and the inset pick guard is inlaid with a floral design featuring both mother of pearl and abalone shell. This mandolin also sports an attractive one-piece maple back and rope bound maple sides. With excellent low action, a friendly shape to the neck, and minimal fret wear, this Wurlitzer is a sheer delight for the player or collector.
