Ampeg BB-4 Baby Bass Late '60s - Sunburst

Built between 1962 and 1971, The Ampeg BB-4 (Baby Bass) was a smaller and more portable option for upright players that allowed for amplification and, therefore, could be used on a wide range of stage sizes. Originally, the body was made of molded fiberglass but then switched to a plastic material called "Uvex", which was filled with foam. The unique "pickup" design used two metal diaphrams, underneath of which were were two magnetic coils the picked up the vibration of the strings. Not only did this recreate a decent upright tone, it allowed for the use of either metal or gut strings. A description is included along with the photographs below. This one was purchased by the consignor's father in the early '70s and gigged rather extensively. However, when not in use, it was completely pampered and kept in extraordinary condition for being nearly 55 years old. Typically, Baby Bass bodies were prone to splitting at the seam, so pretty much every Baby Bass will have some evidence of that. This one is completely in tact all the way around. There is only about a three inch crack on the the top of the bass, but has no effect on the integrity of the instrument. This is the best example you will ever see. Includes a gig bag.
