DESCRIPTION Akai was well known for high-quality tape decks and this model was top of the line from 1981-1983. It is 4-track, 2-channel stereo and takes 7" tape reels running at 7.5 or 3.75 IPS. Unusual features include auto tape loading, real-time (minutes and seconds) tape counter, 6 tape heads (3 for each direction of the auto-reverse), EE tape capability, dual capstan closed-loop tape path, and output level control. Note that this particular example is very unusual for having analog meters, whereas the vast majority had LEDs. This is a U.S.-spec unit for 120V. BEWARE-lots of GX-77's advertised online were Japan home market 100V models which could be unreliable or even dangerous if plugged into 120V. Always check the back panel for voltage rating before you buy.
APPEARANCE The entire unit looks very good. The most significant cosmetic defect I could find is a hairline crack in the top of the counter housing (see photos 15 and 16). Please zoom in on all photos to be sure this nice Akai meets your appearance standards. Be aware that a vintage item may have some small marks that don't readily show up in pictures.
TESTED This unit was extremely clean when I acquired it from the estate of a retired Collins Aerospace engineer. For testing, the Akai was inserted into a quality vintage system with Shure V15-IV cartridge in a Pioneer PL-5 turntable, Marantz 4430 receiver, Sony CDP-300ES CD player, and Mission 763 Tower speakers. Test recordings were made and played back in both forward and reverse directions on Maxell UD tape from a variety of high-quality source material. The recordings sounded great, virtually indistinguishable from the source. All transport functions, controls, switches, meters, and lights operated normally.
NOTICE All of the above info is a snapshot in time from November 2023. As is normal practice for vintage electronics, there is no guarantee or warranty of future condition or performance. There will be NO RETURNS, REFUNDS OR ADJUSTMENTS!
FREE BONUS Two empty metal reels (no tape) and reproductions of the Operator's Manual and Service Manual Parts 1 & 2.
SHIPPING Will ship via UPS to street addresses in the 48 states. Delivery signature will be required. I will pay for Reverb Safe Shipping Insurance, but we are unlikely to need it as your Akai will be packed in a sturdy carton with custom-fitted new styrofoam similar to original packaging from the factory.
