DeArmond Ashbory (short scale, piezo fretless) bass Early 2000s - Red (sparkle)
If you want a double bass sound but don't have the space (or the technique/strength), this Ashbory bass could be a great addition to your instrument collection.
From the wikipedia page: "The Ashbory bass is a solid body fretless bass guitar designed by Alun Ashworth-Jones and Nigel Thornbory. It is 18 inches long, almost half the size of a standard bass guitar. When amplified, the Ashbory reproduces the low, resonant bass tone of a plucked double bass." There is a load of history at web.archive.org/web/20120328053635/. This is the DeArmond-era instrument, launched at NAMM in 1999, made in Korea with less expensive materials but improved hardware vs previous versions.
The strings are made of silicone rubber, and are surprisingly thick. Definitely to be played with fingers rather than a pick. The neck is fretless, and with the short scale length you need to use your ears rather than your eyes to stay in tune higher up the neck. The instrument has a piezo-pickup and active circuitry (volume and treble & bass boost/cut) powered by a 9v battery - I unscrewed the back-plate and put in a new one in when taking these photos.
The instrument is in very good condition, considering it's around 20 years old - no dings or major scratches. It comes in a soft case, with an assortment of spare strings and a strap. The finish has a slight sparkle, although this doesn't really show on the photos.
I've used this bass in a musical theatre situation, where there wasn't space to use a double bass, including community productions of Sweeney Todd and Les Miserables. As you'll hear in the video (yes, that's me, playing this instrument, back in 2008), it's a very practical alternative to a double bass for most (non-arco) situations.
I'm selling because almost everything I do now is on guitar, so I want to share the Ashbory joy around.
As with most sizeable instruments, I'm happy to meet up in the London/M25/M40/M3 area to deliver personally.
