Looks nice, plays nice, sounds nice--doggone it--it is nice and people like it.
A little history of this Penn Mando is in order--
Penn acoustic and archtop guitars, ukuleles and Mandolins were made in Jersey City by United Guitar Corporation in 1950s and possibly into the 60's [Source: Vintage Guitar Price Guide]
According to Vintage Blues Guitars; United Guitar Corporation took over the old Oscar Schmidt factory in Jersey City. They may also have made the Premier brand archtop at this time also.
Penn was an early brand name of the Pennino Music Co. Inc from before they moved to Westminster Calif.-- an older address was 1106 so. Main st. Los Angeles)--thus the Los Angeles listing on the headstock label.
This Mando is solid wood and everything is solid and original as far as i can tell. The neck is straight and solid. The tuners all work fine and there are no cracks or damage to the body.
It plays well and the tone is loud and crisp.
It may need a good set up to fit individual needs but it is good to go.
Comes with a nice case--probably for a Baritone Uke but it works swell for this mando.
