Handcrafted in Arryo Grande California by Premier Builders Guild (PBG) with meticulous attention to detail, this exquisite instrument is a true re-creation of the iconic 1942 model, which has been revered by guitar connoisseurs worldwide. The body, sculpted from the finest spruce and maple, projects a warm, full-bodied resonance that’s both pure and powerful. Its gracefully arched spruce top and flame maple back and sides are not only aesthetically breathtaking but also contribute to its vibrant, articulate sound.

This USA Masterbuilt Reissue was made using state-of-the-art technology in order to make it as true to the original is possible. D'Angelico even used and MRI of the original 1942 Excel model to get the details exactly right. The result is an instrument made to extremely high quality standards, materials, and craftsmanship, just like the original vintage models. And due to its modern construction, you don't have to feel bad about actually playing it and putting some miles on it.

This instrument’s neck is pleasantly chunky - enough to deliver a fantastic tone and sustain - while not being overly thick in the hand. Coupled with the smooth ebony fretboard, it offers a playing experience that's both effortless and precise, inviting jazzers to explore new realms of creativity. 

Initially subject to a less-than-ideal top-seam separation repair, this guitar has since been reinvigorated with a repair more befitting its stature. It’s had strips of spruce inlaid into the seam of the top, and covered with clear coat, after carefully undoing the previous work. Although the visual remnants of the original crack and subsequent repairs are present, they narrate the guitar's resilience and authenticity. This careful blend of preservation and renovation ensures the guitar's structural stability without erasing its past. The addition of a discreet black backing material on the tailpiece shifts focus away from the repair, allowing the instrument's storied charm and sonic prowess to take center stage. We've included photos under the tailpiece to help you make your decision.

Additionally, this instrument has been setup with fresh D’Addario Chromes and had the electronics cleaned for crackle-free operation. The frets have been polished to a gleaming shine, an the fretboard is well conditioned. It’s playing very cleanly at a low, comfortable action. 

With its timeless art deco aesthetics, including the signature stairstep tailpiece and distinctive headstock, the Masterbuilt Excel is more than an instrument—it's a masterpiece that embodies the spirit of a bygone era while offering a sound that's as inspiring today as it was in 1942.
