About This Listing

Roland RE-201 Space Echo for sale serviced and guaranteed.

Buy your 201 from the company who supplied Roland with Space Echoes for their 'Cause And Effects' show celebrating 40 years of Boss pedals.

Excellent example of the mighty Space Echo, for sale serviced and in excellent working order. Sounding superb and working very well following a full service by our tape echo specialist with various new parts as required, including new tape.

100v machine. We can supply or recommend voltage transformers. See below for more info on voltage

CONDITION: Superb overall condition: the face is very near to mint condition. Tolex is also very good with only minor scuffs and scrapes. The chrome side catches look like new. Internal surfaces are also excellent - there are a few very minor oxidation marks here and there, but overall it really is a stunning example of a used machine. See detailed photos for more information.

Heads in excellent condition showing low wear.

Note that we may have machines in a range of conditions (and prices) coming through - check our other listings or get in touch if this unit here isn’t the right one for you.

We're tape and disc echo specialists with many years' experience working with and restoring these machines. Our BBC-trained engineer brings our tape delays up to (or better than) factory spec and our testing ensures machines that have superb reliability and - most important - that they sound incredible. Guaranteed to give reliable service and sound superb.

Roland Space and Chorus Echoes are amazing machines - if you're only going to have one tape echo, then this is the one (IMHO): the multi-head echo combinations together with a great spring reverb adds up to a classic piece of studio gear, the sound of which you've heard on countless records. It could be said that this machine is the sound of dub.

OTHER USEFUL INFO:

This is a Japanese machine with instructions under the lid in Japanese; we can supply replacement instructions in English for all Roland echoes - please ask if you need this.

REPLACEMENT TAPES: We could (and we will) write a lot about our journeys in tape and the misinformation and poor quality tapes that seem to fill the internet. But for now you can buy tried and tested replacement Roland tape loops from us (they are supplied by Echofix). These are the only tapes We may also have a very limited supply of sealed original NOS RT1-L tapes - see our store or get in touch.

There are currently no operational issues with this machine, but please be aware that these units require looking after and that regular use and maintenance are key to keeping this in good working order.

Some crackle is always possible from pots/switches when not used for a while - this can be cleared with use.

VOLTAGE INFORMATION:

  • 100v Japanese model
  • It will run fine on North American mains 115/120v without a transformer (we run all our tests using 120v power); however, a step-down transformer is recommended for extended use.
  • A step-down transformer is required in the UK/EU.
  • We do not recommend using cheap generic Chinese mains transformers and can supply a high quality UK-made unit if required.

Tape echoes and spring reverbs are more relevant today than ever: musicians, engineers and producers harness the unmistakable sound of analogue delay/reverb in current productions. The spring reverb sound of a Space Echo is all over Alabama Shakes' stunning album, Boys & Girls, and top mix engineers such as Tom Elmhirst (Adele) use spring reverb and tape echo - the texture, tone and warmth sit beautifully in the mix.

From subtle sweetening with a subtle dusting of echo and spring reverb, to full on dubtastic self-oscillating madness, this machine is capable of a wide range of effects. The combination of echo, chorus and spring sound fabulous on guitar, piano, synth etc - there is a warm sense of familiarity as a result of these units' classic status whether you're recording or playing live. The repeats are not perfect - this is after all 30-plus year-old tape-based technology - if you want perfect repeats, buy a digital delay. The Sound On Sound feature sounds great and I've just spent an hour noodling away happily - throw in a bit of Chorus and Reverb and you've got a complete sound for your guitar, keys, synths etc...

VAT: If you are in the EU then the price of this item should be displayed including VAT at 20%. VAT-free sales are possible to businesses or individuals outside the UK with a valid VAT number. Please contact us or make an offer and we will let you know how to proceed.
