A gourd serves as the resonator, and the neck is made of a hardwood called sapele, whose midsection is embellished with cowrie shells, brass beads, and seed bead
The (lit. "young man's ngoni" in Bamanankan, Julakan, and Maninkakan) is found among the Mande-speaking peoples of West Africa. Virtually identical to the ("hunter's harp"), from which it is derived, the kamale ngoni differs from that instrument in that it typically has more strings (from six to as many as 12) and is employed in purely musical contexts. My version has 8 monofilament strings (extra ones inside).
